Porn Addiction
Since the arrival of the internet the access to pornography has exploded. It is estimated that 12% of all websites on the internet have adult content. A huge proportion of those sites provide free access to pornographic material.
A 2022 study in the United States reported that approximately 6 out 10 people had watched porn at some point in their lives and 1 in 4 had watched it within the last month. There is no reason to think the New Zealand would be any different.
Another study in 2020 found that approximately 10% of men and 3% of women felt that they had an addiction to pornography. The same study suggested that the rates of pornography watching, and addiction were growing.
In New Zealand, within the addiction clinician workforce, we have been aware of the high rates of pornography addiction for many years. Unfortunately, there has never been any funding for clinicians to provide therapy for those experiencing a pornography addiction. This has meant that many have ended up suffering in silence.
I have developed my own framework for helping people overcome an addiction to pornography. I work with adult (18+) men and women on a private basis.
My framework is based on 10 sessions; the first four sessions are weekly and would ordinarily be completed with the first four weeks of treatment. The remaining six sessions are used as “follow-up” sessions and can range from fortnightly to monthly depending on the situation.
My framework is flexible, so can be adjusted according to treatment requirements. I charge $150 +gst per session, most sessions will go for 1 hour, however I usually have some leeway with timing, depending on the situation.
I am based in Nelson, so can meet with clients from the local area in my office. For clients outside of Nelson, I offer sessions via Zoom Workplace. If you are wanting to engage with me for help in this area, please use the contact form on this website.
